Earth Hour! Lights out! Energy saved!
Yesterday, Mar 29 - Towns and cities around the world turned out the lights for an hour to highlight the threat from climate change.
Sydney's picture-perfect harbour was the first to be plunged into darkness to observe Earth Hour, the greenhouse awareness initiative launched in the city in 2007.
According to Reuters, more than 2.2 million Sydney-siders took part in the event which was observed around the world at more than 370 locations. Our country was represented by our capital city. Way to go Caracas!!!
This was a great initiative, what impressed me the most is that it was organized and supported by young people from all over the world. What an example to follow.... Can Maracaibo participate next year? We'll see.. it's up to us!
What about you? are you thinking green? How can we in our country and schools help others to think green and do something to save the world...

Last Year, our Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela participated at the Proms 2007. But, what was this Proms 2007? ... Well, according to Wikipedia:
The Proms (also more formally known as The BBC Proms, or The Henry Wood Promenade Concerts presented by the BBC) is an eight-week summer season of daily orchestral classical music concerts and other events held annually, predominantly in the Royal Albert Hall in South Kensington, London, United Kingdom.
This was the program that wonderful night:
- Shostakovich
- Symphony No. 10 in E minor (45 mins)
- Bernstein
- West Side Story - Symphonic Dances (22 mins)
- Moncayo
- Huapango (8 mins)
- Márquez
- Danzón No. 2 (9.5 mins)
- Ginastera
- Estancia - Suite (12 mins)

Gustavo Dudamel conductor
Let's listen to Dudamel talk about the orchestra:
Reading the reviews of the show, I found the following comment:
The most talked about Prom of the season, however, came from the incandescent young conductor Gustavo Dudamel and the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela (Prom 48), whose unreserved joy and exuberance possibly distilled the essence of the Proms. These young musicians demonstrated just how accessible and enjoyable classical music can be, and it was impossible for anyone, from absolute amateur to academic, to resist being swept up in the tumult of exhilaration, and will remain my most enduring of Proms memories.
This is where the show in the video took place. For more information on this great event, visit the following links:

- Here you can find two excellent articles that tell about the orchestra, Dudamel and Jose Antonio Abreu, the Father of the orchestra: Land of hope and glory and Orchestral manoeuvres. Also, you can visit Dudamel's site

What is the Internet?
VideoJug: Internet Basics
Internet Basics
What is the "Internet"?
Nobody knows what the internet is. Certainly nobody knows what the internet is anymore, because it's constantly, constantly changing. It is technically, officially an interconnected series of worldwide computers that allow for an exchange of all kinds of information, an emails, and protocols, video and graphics, but one of the key fundamentals in the history of the internet is that it was designed during the cold war, it was partly a response to Sputnik, and all of a sudden the department of defense and the United States government freaked out and the Advanced Research Projects Agency was founded, quickly made a part of the Department of Defense, and one of the initial origins for this network had to do with how would we decentralize communications in the event of a nuclear attack. How could the communications infrastructure reside and be contained in multiple locations, so that no one centralized place could be knocked out, and that was one of the fundamental concept behind the origins of what then became the internet, but this evolved through several academic and technological and government projects, and gradually grew into the internet we now have today, along the way, different things got standardized, packet switching and different kinds of communication protocols, until eventually what we have now is servers and computers, and hosts that exist all over the world, there is no, there is no one place where we can grab the internet, it's now become this technological expression of mass conscientious and information.
What can I do on the Internet? What do you want to do on the internet? Asking what you can do on the internet is like asking “what can I spell with the alphabet?” You can surf for websites, look up movie show times, find out the weather anywhere in the world, see pictures of your house from outer space. You can also rent movies, read reviews on movies, find out who is in a particular movie and you can listen to music, buy music, explore new artists. You can meet friends, you can meet enemies, you can have conversations, you can have monologues, you can send photographs and movies. You can even share your life or you could find ways to hide your life.
